This ebook includes a biographical introduction, a short, critical analysis of Woolf's career and a brief introduction to this work.
Published posthumously by Hogarth Press shortly after Wooolf’s suicide, Between The Acts was her last novel and, strangely perhaps, closest to the first. It takes place over a day before, during and after the staging of an amateur pageant in an English village just before the onset of the Second World War. Unlike her major fictional works, Between The Acts is dialogue driven, rather than introspective, and there is also an omniscient sense to it, as though Woolf is directing the characters much as they would later be directed in the pageant. The play itself takes place in three scenes disconnected by years of history leading from a Shakespearean romance, onto a Restoration comedy and finally a triumphant Victorian parade in a notional Hyde Park.
Critics through the years have noted a deal of allusions and allegorical elements, many dealing with the war, creating a sense of prescience within the characters of the novel, but clearly dealing with it in retrospect. Or at least, that’s what can be assumed. The novel seems to have been conceived around 1938 with the steady onset of war (until very late in the drafting process it was called Pointz Hall, only at this last moment did she change it to Between The Acts), which leads to the assumption that illusory details such as swallows dipping and turning may have been added or included later.
Having completed what would be the final draft, Woolf, descending into the illness that would be her last, declared the novel a failure, saying it couldn't be published. She thought it too superficial and perhaps, in comparison to her great novels, it was, but in being her last and in having it published posthumously, it was notable nevertheless.

Between The Acts Annotated edition by Virginia Woolf Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I just did not find this an engaging read. The characters are well drawn, but i found the whole story a bit tedious. I may not have gotten all the allusions or maybe I am just afraid of Virginia Woolf.
Virginia Woolf takes us into the hearts and minds of her characters and the existential position of our lives; then, now, the future.
A masterpiece!
