William ‘Bayou Billy’ McCall is an infamous outlaw who dies ignominiously at a very old age. He leaves behind a mixed history of anti-heroism and unethical immorality in the form of legends and tall tales. The two towns in which Bayou Billy simultaneously lived, Sawdust City, Texas, and Albie, Louisiana, immediately begin to bicker over which one will get to bury the notorious criminal and thus achieve the prominence that goes with the burial. Pascal Waterford, the mayor of Sawdust City and a die-hard alcoholic, is cheered by Bayou Billy’s death. He knows that Billy has previously promised his body to Sawdust City in exchange for free utilities. The gain of a tourism attraction in the form of a famous felon’s gravesite will save Sawdust City from economic ruin and salve Pascal’s scruples. Ophelia Rector, a prominent citizen of Albie and owner of the local mortuary, knows of Billy’s similar promise to the mayor of Albie for cessation of taxes and complimentary utilities. Her loving pet project is the restoration of Albie’s cemetery and the promotion of the same into a grand memorial park. Her need for control over Bayou Billy’s cadaver is obsession personified. Both Pascal and Ophelia will fight to the bitter end to discover how low each can sink in their efforts to obtain the rotting corpse of a dislikeable man whose fame was more prestigious than the man himself.

This book is crazy...crazy good. The plot isn't far fetched, as there have been times different locations fought over where to bury a famous, or infamous, person. Bevill has a way with words and wit that few authors have. For those offended by some of the language the book contains, well, not everyone speaks like they have a stick up their behind, and even the most pious might use some of the same language under the same circumstances. I found this book hilarious, well written, witty, and well edited. I enjoy all Bevill's books, and this one was no exception.Product details

The Life and Death of Bayou Billy edition by CL Bevill Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I loved this hilarious farce centered around the death of a notorious bandit and the attempts by two cities to make money from having his body buried in their town. The characters are well drawn and funny. I truly enjoyed the book but can't give it a 5-star rating.
The paragraphs were all left-justified without space between them. This made it hard to read but I persevered because the story got funnier and funnier. A warning - it does contain a lot of adult language.
...over another C. L. Bevill novel.
Bayou Billy... thief, murderer, wastrel, loved by the masses.,,, well, except his many ex-wives.
Upon his death at 110, he was immediately the center of controversy when two neighboring towns wanted to lay claim to his body.
The body-snatching begins, things become more convoluted and snarled and twisted than can be imagined.
And it just gets funnier and funnier.
This is great book and very funny. It is about the rival cities in Texas and Louisana that want to bury a dead outlaw. The lie, conive, and steal the poor body back and forth throughout the whole story, with each theft becoming funnier. Bevill really makes the characters come alive. I started laughing on the first page and enjoyed laughing until the very end. How this stuff comes into her head and flows from the pages to my head I will never understand.
I became a fan of Bevill's "Bubba" stories and highly recommend those as well. Her continued mastery of small-town deep South insanity shows in "Bayou Billy." I loved this book. The characters are deep, changeable and totally Southern-nuts. The situations are laugh-out-loud ridiculous and the mental images of the sight gags remind me of Saturday morning Yosemite Sam cartoons. (That's a good thing in my world.) This is a wonderful piece of brain candy good for quite a few laughs. I'm giving 4 stars because some plot developments are predictable, but overall, a worthy comedic entry.
I read this book and found myself literally laughing out loud at some passages. The book switches back and forth between interviews with people who knew the singular individual who was Bayou Billy and the two people who are trying with everything they have to lay claim to him in the here and now. The unraveling of the two claimants, and the motivations behind their claims, make you want to continue reading (just so you can find out WHAT HAPPENED!!!) Mix in a few, uh, colorful characters and a stray hurricane, and you've got the recipe for this very funny, very enjoyable book. Get it, read it. You won't regret it.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the stories written by this author. I saved this book for the last. The author did an excellent job in developing the characters and the scenes. I do have one thing that after a while I skipped over. I know that the history of Bayou Billy was in there to give character background of the man, but there were times, that I just skipped over it. After the first few interviews I got the point of what type of character the man had. I don't know how else they could have been entered other than maybe one of the main characters reading an interview throughout the book. I would read anything this author writes! Especially the Bubba books!
With most municipalities suffering from cash flow problems, the stage has been set for this story. Bayou Billy has died after a legendary life. The problem is, with apparently no living relatives, two rival towns can claim the body and save Billy from a pauper's grave. And whoever gets to claim the body and bury him has the world at their fingertips -- the Bayou Billy memorial. The theme park! The museum! Hotels and restaurants springing up all over the place.
Stand by and watch the two administrators battle it out with no holds barred and trick is too dirty.
If you like colorful characters, past and present, and are willing to suspend a bit of disbelief, this is for you. RIP Bayou Billy.
